Oh, that feeling when you turn your PC on, hear suspicious rustle coming from direction of your hard drives and spend a minute worrying before realizing that sound is actually coming from a building across the street, which is undergoing renovation...

Okay, October spent 14 years enchanted and isn't good with modern technology. But then author writes about someone who doesn't answer her uncle's calls (from uncle's point of view), whose uncle doesn't answer her phone calls (from her point of view), who makes her calls using a computer network, who doesn't even suspect that her communications with her uncle may be intercepted/blocked - and who is a brilliant IT engineer leading a whole team of IT professionals.

I need to subclass an abstract class. As I was implementing one of abstract class methods in my derived class, Xcode put a red error mark on "void Listener::BeginContact(b2Contact* c)" line, telling me there are three errors. I double checked my spelling and syntax and found no errors, so I clicked on error mark to see error descriptions. Xcode crashed.

When I restarted Xcode, error mark was still there. I clicked on it and Xcode crashed.

I restarted Xcode, deleted project's derived data, restarted Xcode again. Error mark was still there. I clicked on it and Xcode crashed.

I restarted Xcode, built the project (clean) - error mark was still there. I did the clean build again - and error mark was gone. W. T. F.

Russian mobile operator Megafon managed to make thousands of SMS sent from its website open to the Yandex web search engine, which promptly indexed them. Complete message texts, tied to the actual phone numbers. By the time Yandex cleared its cache, someone collected 997 messages and made a Google spreadsheet. All this because Megafon didn't put robots.txt file into directory with SMS texts...

IEFBR14 is an IBM mainframe utility program. It runs in all IBM mainframe environments derived from OS/360, including z/OS. It is a placeholder whose purpose is to do nothing. As it turned out, over the years, it would have problems correctly doing nothing and would sometimes fail in the task.

In the times of prohibition of alcohol in Soviet Union, an old man was arrested for moonshine brewing. "But I didn't brew any!" - said the old man. "But you have the distiller", - said the policeman. "Well, then arrest me for rape as well." "What? But... Did you rape anyone?" "No, but I have penis".

A British court has effectively abolished the import and sale of blank Nintendo DS cartridges. The mere possibility of piracy is sufficient to ban them, even if the media has legitimate uses such as storing freely-available third-party software. "The mere fact that the device can be used for a non-infringing purpose is not a defence," read the ruling by Justice Floyd.

It reads like an Onion article. Seriously.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

"To correct loss of signal strength and resulting call drops we are making phone display lower than actual signal strength". Is it the first official acknowledgment of the fact that Apple thinks its customers are idiots?

Tarren Mill (EU) server was lagging and crashing for several days. The reason of crashing were actions of one person.

This player discovered that spamming nacro

caused major lag and crashes to server. What would you do if you discovered such an exploit? I would report it to support team and never use it. This player decided to do exactly opposite. He spammed and spammed this macro, then told about it to several his friends (apparently <GameOver> guild) and they spammed it too. Birds of feather have flocked together?

In addition to being the assholes, these players also couldn't hold their tongues. Players of the Tarren Mill learned the name of mastermind behind the crashes. Athrigos.

Athrigos thought he was safe behind his avatar. He was wrong.

Imageshack взяв моду ламатися.

Запрацювало! І працює краще за "рідний" вентилятор, бо температура відяхи така ж, а комп тепер значно тихіший. От тепер думаю, то мо' і не купляти новий кулер?

Say, someone was hacked and carelessly posted about this on forums. What kind of response will s/he receive?

Victim blaming, of course. "Lol, you were asking for it"
And, of course, "Buy authenticator, you fool".

And if s/he gets a blue answer, it will be "bla-bla-bla, and buy authenticator".

Разломав нахрен пластиковый ящик 3.5-дюймовой дискеты, можно с радостью констатировать, что магнитный диск защищён с двух сторон приятной на ощупь тряпкой. Так вот, этой тряпкой можно протирать LCD-мониторы.
